Indonesian Zoos

Updated on June 16, 2011

Zoos in Indonesia

Indonesian Zoos are extremely popular, especially at the weekends and public holidays. The zoos are looked upon not only as a place to see animals but as a meeting place to catch up with friends, to gossip and to promenade.

Most of the big cities in Indonesia will have a zoo. Many of these are quite old and have their origins back to the time of Dutch occupation. Sadly in come cases there has been very little improvement in cage design or amenities since then.

There are other large and more modern collections but these are mainly exploitative commercially and only play a token role in conservation, education and research. The animals are a means to an end rather than the reason for the collection as in the modern good zoo.

In my travels around Indonesia visiting zoos I was quickly only too aware how confusing it could be. Most of the zoos had two names and some of them even more than that. I also discovered one zoo which I knew nothing at all about. Doubtless then the list above does not include all the zoos. I should like to make it complete. If you are aware of any I have missed then please note and give details in the comment section below. I won't publish the comment. I will just extract the information.

Other than my Indonesian Zoo Reports and the naturally biased websites for the collections there is little to read on zoos in the country. You may care to read the 2002 WSPA report An Evaluation of Five Zoos in Indonesia
