It was long been known that a bite from the venomous Brazilian Wandering Spider Phoneutria nigriventer had some rather unusual side effects. These include a long and painful erection or 'priapism' which may last for as long as four hours. In fact it is this very erection which indicates to doctors as to why the patient has been admitted as a patient. The agressive Brazilian Wandering Spider is sometimes known as the Banana Spider and is found in tropical South and Central America. Although it is known to be the worlds most poisonous spider there are very few deaths resulting from the several thousand bites recorded. Bites can be extremely painful, cause breathing difficulties and loss of muscle control.
Similar priapism has been observed in people bitten by the Black Widow Spider but primarily the 'Natural Viagra' effect is known from Banana Spider Bites.
Brazilian Wandering Spider
Viagra does not work for everybody. Presently there are tests being carried out to see if modified venom from the Brazilian Wandering Spider could be used on people suffering from erectile dysfunction (18 million in the US alone) who find that drigs like Viagra and Cialis are of no help.
So far there has been some very promising results in laboratory rats.
Banana Spider
The Brazilian Wandering Spider does not look too unlike some large British Spiders. In my 40 year Zoo career I have had about a dozen Banana Spiders handed in to be from Supermarkets and Banana ripening stores. There has been at least one case of a Brazilian Wandering Spider bite in the UK.
