Essential Books for Carnivore Keepers

More by luck than design my first job in a zoo back in 1968 was as a 'Cat Keeper'. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then but that initial contact with the carnivores was the start of an enduring romance. I still love the big cats...but the small ones too. Otters also fascinate me as do wolves, and I have a special affection for Dingo's.

In those early days there was not a lot to read on Zoo Carnivores. There was Crandall of course and the various sections of the very few 'International Zoo Yearbooks'. My learning was a steep spiralling curve of information gleaned from my practical experience and conversations with the odd ex-circus employees who littered the zoo world at that time. I don't regret it for a minute but I would love to have had access to the abundant and excellent reading matter available today.

would have liked to include but they are either out of print or currently unavailable.
