Zoo Careers

Employment in a zoo as a career move continues to be ever more popular. As an animal career choice it has just that touch more appeal as it is more exotic. Zoo keeping work is as hard as it is interesting and there is tremendous competition for the few places which become available each year.

Every potential candidate for a zoo job needs to have an edge over others who may have applied for the post. Ideally, today, anyone applying for a zoo job will require to have some relevant qualification or be prepared to work towards getting one. If the prospective zoo employee is not qualified then they will need to show why they should be considered. This would be evidence of voluntary work, dedication and a number of other skills which would be of use to the zoo employer.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a zoo local to themselves so working in a zoo will require an ability to move and settle. Although some zoo staff will remain in the zoo they started work in for their entire careers a good percentage are itinerant and will move four or five times during their working life. Such moves are usually made to further their careers or to gain experience with other species of animal or to learn from people they admire.

Looking For Zoo Work

Vacancies in zoos are advertised in a wide variety of publications. Some Zoological Gardens never advertise at all but keep a drawer full of application letters which they delve into should they have a vacant zoo job.

Most, but not all zoos will be looking for experienced staff. They will ideally go for someone with experience, a good work record and a college or university background. There is a surprisingly high number of university graduates working as zoo keepers. It does not take long to realise that not everybody can 'research chimpanzees in the wild'

One of the best places to look for zoo jobs and zoo careers is:

It is also a good site to check through what zoo employers are looking for in prospective candidates.

A Zoo Career is a good move. Though the financial remuneration may not be as high as it is in some professions, the camaraderie is great and the job satisfaction immense.

H P Roychoudhury - Thank you for reading. I don't believe you necessarily have to love animals but just to have a genuine interest them and the future of our planet.
